Israel’s High Court of Justice has ruled that quarries harvesting natural resources located in the West Bank — areas Israel acquired in the 1967 war — may continue to operate but no new quarries should be started. The ruling came in response to a pro-Palestinian activist organization that claimed international law prohibits exploiting natural resources from land under occupation. The court said the requirement was that resources be harvested according to laws of fair usage which Israel meets. In particular, the Palestinian population shares in the benefit derived from the quarries, including the creation of a large number of jobs. The plaintiffs’ attorney called the Israeli mining operations “looting.”
