Israel’s President Isaac Herzog in Cyprus Calls Ukraine War Lesson for Mediterranean Countries

During an official visit to Cyprus, Israel’s President Isaac Herzog called the war in Ukraine “an affront to the international order,” and suggested that it is a lesson for Mediterranean countries. “The conflict that is currently unfolding in front of our eyes is a tragic reminder of the necessity of working together to protect our dearest values, principles and interests. This is exactly my message in Turkey, as I believe in cooperation between people and all faiths for the well-being of humanity,” he told Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades during a news conference after their meeting on Wednesday. “It is during times of hardship and turmoil that we must stand together and reaffirm our long-standing and historic alliances.” His visit was, in part, an effort to reassure Cyprus that Israel’s rapprochement with Turkey will not affect ties with Cyprus. Herzog is scheduled to visit Turkey later this month, at the invitation of President Tayyip Recep Erdogan. Israel-Turkish ties have become warmer in recent months after a fallout more than a decade ago, while Turkey and Cyprus have a fraught relationship, stemming from a coup in Turkey in the 1970s and territorial disputes. “The Cyprus-Israel relationship is a pillar of Mediterranean stability in the present, and a key to a sustainable, healthy, and prosperous region in the future,” Herzog also said.
