Israel’s President Shimon Peres will meet President Obama at the White House next week, ahead of the planned visit of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. The announcement was made by Peres’s office. Tension has permeated the Jerusalem-Washington relationship since the two new leaders took office: Obama vowing to move on a fast track vis-à-vis Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking; and Netanyahu refusing to embrace the diplomatic mantra of a two-state solution. Peres adds to the list of Middle Eastern leaders lining up for one-on-one time with President Obama that began with Jordanian King Abdallah II and continues with the two Israelis followed by Palestinian Authority head Mahmoud ‘Abbas.
