Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu struck back at criticism of his latest building plans in Jerusalem and the West Bank on land Israel captured in 1967. “I am saying this in the clearest way possible: The Western Wall is not occupied territory, and I do not care what the United Nations says (on his matter) Netanyahu told Israel Television’s Channel Two. Israel has come under a firestorm of criticism from the international community for the approval of thousands of new homes in East Jerusalem, which Israel says is part of its capital and the Palestinians say must be the future capital of a Palestinian state. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said Israel’s plan to build in a controversial area called E-1, between Jerusalem and the community called Maalei Adumim, are “a red line and we will not allow it to happen.”
