Israel’s Supreme Court: Palestinians May Use Restricted Highway

Israel’s Supreme Court has ordered the government to allow Palestinians to use a highway leading to the capital that has been off-limits since 2002. The restriction was imposed because of a number of shootings of motorists by Palestinians along the roadway that runs through post-1967 territory. Plaintiffs in the case were residents of Palestinian villages that line Route 443. Before Palestinians will be able to access the road, concrete barriers will have to be removed. The Court has allowed five months for that to happen. The decision comes only days after an Israeli man was shot dead as he drove on another road in post-1967 territory.
