Israel’s universities appear headed for another strike. When a meeting on Wednesday between heads of the universities and the treasury collapsed after only half an hour, it was apparent there was little upon which a compromise could be fashioned. The Finance Ministry is refusing to release money allocated to the universities in the state budget, without which the universities say they cannot function. Last year, senior professors struck for 91 days, causing a major upheaval in the academic calendar and in studies for thousands of students. The school year was to have begun on November 2.
