Jesus’ Tomb Opened for First Time since 16th Century

The tomb that Christian tradition says held the body of Jesus between the crucifixion and his resurrection three days later has been opened for what experts believe is the first time since the 16th century. The cave where the body was believed to have been placed was covered by a chapel inside the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem where a marble stone sealed the tomb. Because Christians believe he was resurrected, the tomb is empty. The reason for the opening of the tomb was to facilitate renovations to the tomb, the structure above it, called an Aedicule. The renovation was only made possible by the agreement of the three churches that share the Church of the Holy Sepulcher — the Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Armenian churches – a process that took more than six months to complete.
