Officials in Tunisia report an attack against a Jewish school on the island of Djerba. Situated in a tourist mecca that once was home to an ancient Jewish community, the school was the target of fire bombs but no serious damage or injuries was reported. At the time of the assault on the school building, at least 20 Tunisian cities were preoccupied with street protests against the rise of prices and a new tax that took affect on January 1.
In Egypt, 262 defendants facing charges that date back to a sit-in protesting the over-throw of Mohamed Morsi in 2013 were sentenced by a Cairo court to prison terms ranging from three years to fifteen years to life. The charges ranged from the murder of two police officers to murder, attempted murder and vandalism.
