JNF Tries to Downplay its Role in Eviction of Arab Family from Silwan Property

The Jewish National Fund (JNF) has been caught up in the case of an Arab family being evicted from a home in the Silwan area of Jerusalem. The daily newspaper Haaretz reported that the case, which has been ongoing for 20 years, was initiated by a wholly-owned subsidiary of the JNF. After Haaretz published a report on the case, a group of left-wing organizations launched a campaign against those behind the eviction, including JNF. In response, the JNF issued a statement denying responsibility, which it falls to Eldad — a right-wing organization that buys up property to place Jewish residents in east Jerusalem neighborhoods – because it leased the property. That was when the newspaper confirmed that all legal actions were initiated by the JNF subsidiary. With the eviction set to be carried out on Monday, the JNF announced a delay in the case on Thursday night. The owner of the property in question died in 1983 and the property itself came under control of the Custodian of Absentee Properties in 1991 when it was established that the heirs were all living abroad.
