Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, at a meeting with UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi in Amman on Tuesday, said the international community must immediately facilitate the voluntary return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.
In a statement released by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, Safadi emphasized that the refugees’ future was in Syria, not Jordan, and called for the creation of decent living conditions. The minister also warned of the “dangerous repercussions” of waning international support, stressing that Jordan had surpassed its capacity to host Syrian refugees and required international backing to sustain essential services.

The meeting also reviewed recent dialogues between Jordan, UNHCR, and the Syrian government concerning guarantees and infrastructure for the refugees’ return. Additionally, the two discussed preparations for the 2023 Global Refugee Forum, to be hosted by Switzerland and UNHCR in Geneva.
King Abdullah II of Jordan also met with Grandi, urging the international community to assist refugee host countries. Grandi praised Jordan’s significant humanitarian role in supporting refugees.
