Jordan Indicts Senior Corruption Suspects

A Jordanian court has issued an indictment against four high-profile figures in a corruption case related to the expansion of the Jordan Petroleum Refinery Company (JPRC). Yousef Faouri, attorney general at Jordan’s State Security Court issued the indictment on Tuesday, the official Jordanian news agency Petra reported. The four suspects, including a former finance minister, were arrested on March 3 by order of the public prosecutor for their alleged involvement in a case of bribery and abuse of public office in a project to modernize the country’s only oil refinery at a cost of $2.1 billion. The charges are being read out to the defendants in court Wednesday before their trial begins. This was the first report on the case since an order was imposed on March 9 banning news coverage of the case without Faouri’s approval. The case has rocked the political establishment, as Prime Minister Ahmad Refai made fighting corruption a primary goal in his political platform prior to his appointment to the post last December.
