Jordan is petitioning the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in order to derail Israeli construction of a new airport to replace the Eilat airport at the southern tip of the state. The Israeli port of Eilat is actually half of a larger entity that includes Jordanian Aqaba. The gist of the Jordanian complaint is that the new airfield under construction called “Timna” comes too close to Jordan’s King Hussein international airport, creating an unsafe situation. It is located about 12 miles from the city of Eilat but only 6 miles from the Aqaba airport. In past years there had been talk about building a regional airport that would serve both the Israeli and Jordanian towns, but such ideas have long since dissipated.
