A Jordanian national was sentenced to 80 lashes and nine years in prison on Wednesday on charges that he spied for Israel. A Saudi news site reported that the unnamed defendant had contacted Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and “a Zionist intelligence officer,” offering to spy in return for payment. The defendant will be deported after serving the sentence according to the report which also listed sex-out-of-wedlock and drug use as crimes for which he was found guilty. There were no other details of the arrest or the defendant’s alleged espionage activities.
