Justices Assassinated in Kabul Attack Amid Peace Talks

Turmoil in Afghanistan continued on Sunday, as two Supreme Court justices were gunned down in Kabul by unidentified assassins. Local police said the two female judges were killed and their driver wounded in an apparent drive-by shooting on the streets of the capital, adding to the growing number of attacks on government officials, activists and journalists in recent months by extremists. A spokesman for the Taliban, the radical insurgent group which is currently holding peace talks with the Afghan government, said its fighters were not involved in the deadly incident. President Ashraf Ghani condemned the attacks, saying that “terror, horror and crime” were not the solution to the country’s woes and imploring the Taliban to accept a permanent cease-fire. As power-sharing negotiations, brokered by the United States which itself signed an agreement with the Taliban last year, continue, terror attacks by the Taliban against civilians and officials in Afghanistan have intensified.
