Kerry Raises Possibility of Walking Away from Iran Nuclear Talks

US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Saturday that the United States is willing to walk away from the negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program if there is no indication that Tehran is not seeking nuclear arms. Kerry referred to what he called “significant gaps” that remain in talks and cautioned that the inclusion in the talks of both nations’ nuclear chiefs should not be misconstrued as progress. Kerry’s admonition came as the deadline of end of March to have a framework agreement in-hand draws near with no discernible progress to report. He meets with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif Javad in Geneva for two days of talks beginning on Sunday. The SecState said President Obama is “is fully prepared to stop these talks if he feels that they're not being met with the kind of productive decision-making necessary to prove that a program is in fact peaceful.” This, with Congress seemingly prepared to invoke additional economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic if the March deadline passes with no results. While much attention has been focused on the rift between President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu over their differing approaches to the Iranian nuclear issue, the White House has been hearing complaints and criticism from its Arab allies as well. The talks have already been extended twice during the eighteen months of negotiations and the US insists there will be no additional time allowances. The Wall Street Journal quoted an unnamed Arab official who, using  Netanyahu’s language, said, “We prefer a collapse of the diplomatic process to a bad deal.”
