Kerry Talks on the Ropes; Contemplating Next Move; Palestinians Rally

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s failure to go through with the promised prisoner release expected on Saturday night did not surprise many based on the rife speculation circulating in previous days. A report from Ramallah on Monday said Netanyahu has given Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas a proposal for extending talks, but details are unknown. Eyes are now on US Secretary of State John Kerry, who most believe will work toward sweetening the pot for Abbas with, perhaps, even more prisoners being set free than previously agreed to. Netanyahu ostensibly refused to release the final group of 26 out of a total of 104 because Abbas had not agreed to continue the process past the 9-month deadline of April 30. Despite a Netanyahu statement insisting he would not permit any further prisoner releases without a quid pro quo for Israel, most believe a new prisoner deal that will see between 400 and 1,000 set free will replace the aborted plan. Palestinian officials are meeting on Monday to assess the situation and to discuss what steps the PA will take if no agreement on the prisoner release can be reached. Israel’s aborting of the release fueled the passions of as many as 15,000 demonstrators who turned out for the annual “Land Day” protest.
