Khashoggi Anniversary Marked by Protests but Son Defends Saudi Kingdom

Two very different stories are being reported on the first anniversary of the murder of Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi Arabian Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. The killing, which triggered an onslaught of international condemnations of the Saudis and in particular Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman; and which triggered a significant loss of American Congressional support for the Saudis, was the subject of a number of street protests leading up to the anniversary on Wednesday. But the primary defense of the Saudis came from Khashoggi’s son Salah, who denied that he and his siblings had been compensated by the Saudi government, rather than criticizing or accusing his country lashed out at those who he said were benefiting off of what he termed “enemies of the East and West” who sought to undermine Saudi leadership by “exploiting” the case. He expressed confidence in the Saudi system of justice which has eleven suspects in his father’s killing on trial – five to be executed if convicted.
