Three Palestinian assailants who launched attacks with knives in the old city of Jerusalem Friday night were shot to death by security personnel but not before a woman border police officer was stabbed to death. A second officer was wounded and evacuated to a hospital. It was learned that at least one of the attackers carried a permit to enter Israel – all were residents of the West Bank. The attack came during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which has prompted a high security level even though there have been few incidents this year. Israeli officials report there are 180,000 Palestinians holding special permits to enter Israel during Ramadan, although a large number of permits are expected to be withdrawn because of the attack.
