Kushner to Formally Present US Peace Plan to Security Council
Senior Trump Administration adviser Jared Kushner is slated to formally present details of the US Middle East peace plan to the United Nations Security Council during a closed-door meeting on Thursday. Kushner, the architect of the proposal, is expected to lobby members of the 14-nation body to back the terms of what President Donald Trump once called the “deal of the century” while nevertheless allowing them to express their reservations. The news comes just days after the Arab League voted unanimously to reject the plan in what is being viewed as a major setback for Washington. Kushner’s presentation is set to take place ahead of next week’s prospective visit to New York by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who will press the Security Council to oppose the White House initiative. Abbas has vowed to consign the peace plan to the “dustbins of history.” While calling for the creation of a Palestinian state, the proposal envisions Israel annexing significant portions of the West Bank.
