Largest Tunisian Coalition Partner Opts Away from Islamic Law

The largest party in Tunisia’s new ruling coalition government says it will not allow the new constitution to declare Sharia (Islamic law) to be the nation’s guiding force. Party officials say language from the previous constitution that simply identifies Isalm as the state religion will not be changed as some had feared because of the strong stance by Salafists on the issue. A senior official of the Ennahda party told reporters that the decision was based on its desire to promote national unity. Tunisia is widely credited with kicking-off the wave of unrest in the Middle East last January that became known as the Arab Spring. In other countries, Islamists are taking control following regime change prompting many to question whether the movements will result in less rather than more democratic governments. Ennahda leaders said they wanted to set an example for other nations undergoing similar changes.
