Inflaming an age-old debate in Israel about seating as parliamentarians those who oppose the existence of the state, two senior members of the Arab List attended an event allegedly organized by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine – both of which are listed as terrorist organizations – in east Jerusalem on Tuesday. Ayman Odeh, a legislator who heads the party that is an amalgam of the nation’s Arab parties, was present at the event before it was broken-up by police. The event, whose topic had been “Jerusalem as Palestine’s Capital,” was said by the Russian Embassy to have been sponsored by the Society of Palestinian – Russian Friendship, and not the two terror groups. But while the Russian organizations defended the event as legitimate discourse, Speaker of Israeli Parliament Yuli Edelstein said he was filing a complaint against Odeh after witnessing his speech which, according to Edelstein, was “inciting to violence.” According to Speaker Edelstein, “There is no room for inciters in the Israeli Knesset.”
