Four pro-Syrian Lebanese generals, who have been in custody since 2005 in the case of the assassination of former prime minister Rafiq Al-Hariri, were released on Wednesday. The order to release the four came from the United Nations court that was set up to investigate the assassination. The reason for the release was insufficient evidence. Word of the court action triggered celebrations by Syrian sympathizers – mainly members of Hizbullah. Lebanon’s two significant political camps – those supporting Syria and those who sympathize with the West – will compete in national elections in June.
