Two years and 70,000 deaths later, it remains impossible to discern whether the affections of the Syrian capital’s remaining citizens lean toward the Bashar Al-Assad regime or its opponents. The Beirut-based Daily Star reported on Thursday that, “the country is an inconclusive ramble through competing narratives formed by conspiracy theories, fear and conflicting agendas.” The paper reports that while conditions in Damascus worsen and life becomes more difficult, assigning blame is dependent upon who you are: your sect, financial class and personal interests. The writer’s assessments were drawn from a visit permitted by the government which allowed greater access than is allowed to foreign media.
