Lebanese Newspaper Fears “Homegrown Terrorism” is Taking Hold

A deadly fallout from the Syrian civil war is a surge in homegrown terrorism according to the Beirut newspaper Daily Star. The paper reports that the double suicide bombings of the Iranian Embassy in Beirut last week was carried out by a Lebanese citizen and a Palestinian resident of Lebanon with links to a radical Islamist preacher. The newspaper quotes a political analyst as pointing out that it’s not necessary to import suicide bombers who are unfamiliar with the country when you can use the homegrown variety. As is the case in other Middle Eastern nations, a local franchise of the Al-Qa’ida global terrorism network is becoming more dangerous. In Lebanon, it’s the Abdullah Azzam Brigades. Officials fear a sharp rise in sectarian violence between Sunni and Shiites if suicide bombers become more prolific.
