As the international community has failed to impose any cease-fire to prevent cross-border attacks between Israel and Lebanon, the government in Beirut said the number of people killed as a result of the fighting is now in excess of 600. Some 400 people have been confirmed dead by the authorities but it is feared an additional 200 bodies are trapped under collapsed buildings. The aid effort is speeding up with planes and boats bringing humanitarian aid into Lebanon. Israel is said to be respecting a safe corridor allowing for the transport of food and medical supplies to those in need.
