Lebanon Boosts Public Sector Wages To Alleviate Financial Strain

The Lebanese government announced on Wednesday that public sector employees, including civil servants, military personnel, and retirees, will receive three additional monthly salaries. This decision, aimed at mitigating the impact of Lebanon’s severe financial crisis, comes after a nationwide strike protesting low wages. With the adjustment, the minimum monthly income for public sector workers will increase to $400. Additionally, to ease the burden of soaring fuel costs, the government will subsidize gasoline for up to 14 working days per month for these employees. Lebanon’s economy has been in turmoil, with the local currency plummeting and salaries reduced by over 90%, thrusting more than 80% of its population into poverty and restricting access to bank deposits and savings.
