Lebanon Impounds Arms Ship Headed for Syria; Opposition Strikes from Sea

A cargo ship sailing under the flag of Sierra Leone and carrying arms bound for Syria was detained by Lebanese authorities on Friday. Its crew of eleven was held for questioning. The Lebanese army released a statement saying the shipment seized included “three containers with a large quantity of assorted arms as well as heavy, medium and light ammunition.”  The ship originated in Libya and stopped at Alexandria, Egypt, before entering Lebanese waters en route to Syria. Lebanese President Michel Sleiman praised the interdiction, saying that the action helps preserve the peace and prevents Lebanon from becoming “an arena of conflict for others.” No mention was made of whether the arms were intended for the Syrian regime or opposition forces. Syrian government sources have been accusing Lebanon of allowing the smuggling of weapons to opposition fighters. Meanwhile, opposition fighters carried off a successful commando raid on government troops from the sea on Saturday. Gunmen came ashore in inflatable boats and killed a number of “military personnel.” The state-run SANA news agency reported that an unknown number of the attackers were also killed.
