Lebanon’s Future Movement Moves to Opposition

Lebanon’s Future Movement will on Thursday serve formal notice to the prime-minister elect that the nation’s largest bloc of political parties will move to the opposition. The bloc is headed by caretaker Prime Minister Sa’ad Al-Hariri, whose coalition fell when Hizbullah bolted and then became the powerbroker in assembling a new government. Al-Hariri made it clear that he would not sit in the government which is effectively controlled by the Iranian and Syrian-backed organization that is on the U.S. terrorist list. Najib Miqati, Hizbullah’s candidate, has been approved to become the next prime minister. He will now begin speaking with each of the parties represented in the parliament in an effort to construct his government. Miqati has been quoted as saying that if Al-Hariri’s bloc will become part of the government, he will not object to offering it a “one-third-plus-one” effective veto-power. But the bloc’s response so far has been public protests and demonstrations against Hizbullah. The issue that brought down the Al-Hariri government is the U.N. Special Tribunal for Lebanon which is investigating the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Al-Hariri, the father of Sa’ad. Hizbullah calls the tribunal an Israeli plot and has threatened violence when – as expected – Hizbullah members are indicted. Al-Hariri’s bloc insists on upholding the international mandate for a thorough investigation and appropriate response to the murder.
