Libyan Prime Minister Urges Elections To End Political Stalemate

Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah on Monday stressed that holding elections is the only viable path to resolving Libya’s long-standing political crisis. His comments came during a meeting in Tripoli with Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso, who heads the African Union High-Level Committee on Libya. The discussions focused on advancing national reconciliation in Libya, with an emphasis on collaboration between Libya and Congo.

According to a statement from the Libyan government, Dbeibah asserted that the political deadlock stems from divisions within the ruling political class, not among the Libyan people. He called for unified regional and international efforts to support reconciliation, praising the African Union’s ongoing initiatives to foster peace in the country.

President Sassou Nguesso suggested drafting a national reconciliation charter and urged Libya’s rival factions to adopt it as a step toward rebuilding trust and stability. Both leaders emphasized the importance of regional cooperation to achieve a unified Libya.

Libya has faced persistent unrest since the 2011 overthrow of Moammar Gadhafi. The country remains divided between two competing governments: one in the east and another in the west. General elections, initially planned for December 2021, were postponed due to disputes over electoral laws, deepening the political and security challenges.

The African Union has played a key role in mediating between Libya’s factions, while international stakeholders have repeatedly called for elections as a way to restore stability and legitimacy to the nation’s governance.
