Manhunt Continues for Palestinian Prisoners on the Lam

The manhunt in the West Bank and Israel continues for six Palestinian security prisoners who remain on the lam since escaping Monday from the maximum-security Gilboa Prison after digging a tunnel from their cell under the high prison walls. Palestinians throughout the West Bank held violent protests Wednesday night in support of the fugitives, who they consider to be heroes. In response to the riots, the IDF extended the closure of the West Bank, which had been put into place over the Rosh Hashanah holiday and was set to end on Wednesday night, through Saturday night. Meanwhile, it appears that the high-security prison was not as secure as it could have been. The prison was built on stilts, making it easier to tunnel out, and the blueprints for the prison were available on the website of the architect that built it. It also appears that a cellphone was smuggled to the cellmates and, lucky for the escapees, the guard in the watchtower that overlooked the exit from the tunnel fell asleep on his watch, allowing the six men to climb out undetected and meet their getaway vehicle. The fugitives are members of terror organizations; five of the men belonged to Islamic Jihad and one was a former commander of Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades in Jenin in the West Bank. All six of the prisoners were serving life sentences for deadly attacks on Israelis. The Israel Prison Service said Thursday that all security prisoners who were held at Gilboa and transferred after the prison break will be scattered among other prisons in the center and south of the country and will not return.
