The crowds demonstrating in the streets of Ramallah on Tuesday reached the thousands as Palestinians let the Palestinian Authority know the populace bitterly opposes its new social security law. A number of key cities including the administrative capital of Ramallah, Hebron and others were closed. The new law will require employers and their employees to pay amounts monthly into a government-managed fund and withdraw a pension from the fund upon retirement. But the perpetually-financially-strapped PA which is always functioning under clouds of mismanagement and corruption resulting in its subjects riling at the thought of it funds being squandered. Even if the PA does protect the fund, they argue, given the instability of the Israeli-Palestinian dynamic, the future is too uncertain for the new law to prove to be safe and effective.
