The Guardian reports that schools in Gaza are providing military training to teenage boys, including how to use Kalashnikov assault rifles. The weekly classes are part of the curriculum for about 37,000 students age 15-17. There are also voluntary camps during school vacations where boys learn how to handle guns and explosives. About 5000 boys have participated in this school year. The Guardian quoted Mohammed Syam, the general director of educational activities at the Ministry of Education in Gaza that the program is primarily educational and disciplinary. He said that only 1 percent of the program was devoted to weapons. But The Guardian quoted several students saying that learning to use weapons was a major part of the program.
