Ministers Defy Netanyahu Order Not to Contact Trump Team

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s instructions to his cabinet ministers to refrain from reaching out to President-elect Trump or members of his transition team were ignored by his education and agriculture ministers, Naftali Bennett and Uri Uriel, prompting Netanyahu to issue a formal directive reiterating the order. The two ministers have reportedly held extensive conversations with members of the transition team that included efforts to dissuade the president-elect from supporting the so-called “two-state solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Bennett reportedly used meetings with three Trump advisers to offer his own plan for resolving the conflict which, as many commentators have pointed out, undermines the Prime Minister, official positions of the government and presents the incoming administration with the appearance of Israeli disunity. On the official front, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Ron Dermer, wasted no time after the election in conferring with the president-elect and his team. For his part, Trump included Netanyahu among the first conversations he held with heads of state and Dermer was the first foreign ambassador hosted at Trump Tower.
