The surprise package of this year’s European soccer championships is Turkey. The only Middle Eastern country to make it to the last stages of the tournament plays Germany in the semi-finals on Wednesday evening. The other semi will be contested on Thursday between Russia and Spain. The Turks come into the game as the underdogs, having had to come from behind in two of their previous games against the Czech Republic and Croatia. Before this tournament Turkey was already a soccer-mad nation. Tonight millions will take to the streets of the country if their team wins. The game is particularly poignant given the large numbers of Turkish immigrants living in Germany.
