Money For Palestinians On Arab Summit Agenda

Increasing pledges of aid for the Palestinians and getting donor nations to honor their pledges is a key item on the Arab League summit agenda in Riyadh this week. A sum of $750 million per year has been promised since 2001, but the entire amount has never made its way to the Palestinians because Arab governments reneged on their individual pledges. An additional $55 million per month has been sent to the office of P.A. Chairman Mahmoud ‘Abbas since the international community cut off funding when Hamas took control of the government. At the summit it will be decided whether that money should now be paid directly to the new unity government, specifically to the office of Finance Minister Salam Fayyad, a well-respected member of the world financial community. Notwithstanding the suspension of aid to the Hamas-led government, aid to the Palestinians grew from $1 billion in 2005 to $1.2 billion in 2006.
