More Arrests of Journalists in Egypt

Egyptian President Abdel Fateh Al-Sissi continued his campaign against journalists who don’t cooperate with his regime with the arrest of the head of the journalist union and two of his board members on Monday. According to the lawyer representing union head Yahya Qalash, the three were questioned about allegations that they spread false news and harbored wanted journalists and refused to post bail of $1,000 for their release when ordered to. A colleague told the Associated Press that because “the accusations are related to reporting the news that should not involve imprisonment or bail.” A month ago Qalash called for a presidential apology and the interior minister’s resignation over a police raid aimed at detaining journalists accused of inciting protests. The fugitive reporters apparently hid in the union building.
