Morocco’s King to Appoint First Islamist Prime Minister

Morocco’s King Mohammad VI will name the country’s first Islamist prime minister after the prime minister-designate’s party won the most seats in the parliamentary election. The election was the first following last May’s referendum approving a new constitution that transferred some of the king’s powers to the parliament and to the prime minister. By terms of the constitution, the king must appoint the prime minister from the party garnering the greatest number of seats. As is the case in Tunisia, the winning party is being described as “moderate Islamist.”
