Violence continued to rack Egypt as the trial of ousted President Mohamed Morsi got underway in a Cairo courtroom on Tuesday. Morsi is accused of crimes in connection to a jailbreak during the 2011 demonstrations that led to the overthrow of his predecessor, President Hosni Mubarak. Morsi is one of 131 defendants standing trial together. At the start of the proceedings, the ousted leader of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood reportedly jousted verbally with the president of the court, demanding to be recognized as the “president of the republic.” Also on Tuesday, a top police official, General Mohamed Saeed, was gunned down by an assailant riding a motor cycle as he left his Cairo home. In a second incident, gunmen in a car fired on police guarding a Cairo church killing one and wounding two.
