Mortars Land inside Northern Israel

Israel’s security forces are investigating the circumstances that led to mortar rounds fired by the Syrian army falling inside of northern Israel on Tuesday morning. A number of shells fell inside Kibbutz Elrom in the Golan Heights but caused no injuries or damage. Early reports indicate the mortar rounds were fired at opposition fighters in the Syrian village of Jubata Al-Khashab but over-flew their targets.  Residents of the Golan Heights reported hearing the sound of artillery throughout the night. At least 40 more Syrians died on Monday as the result of intense aerial bombardment by the forces loyal to President Bashar Al-Assad. On Monday, UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi characterized the situation in Syria as being “extremely bad and getting worse.” Kofi Annan’s replacement delivered his first briefing to the Security Council on Monday, where he admitted that he “does not have a full plan for the moment, but I have a few ideas.”
