Delegations from both Fatah and Hamas, the main Palestinian factions, are in Egypt on Wednesday for talks with leading Egyptian officials. However, the Hamas team will not be afforded a meeting with President Hosni Mubarak. The head of the Fatah group, Palestinian leader Mahmoud ‘Abbas, though, will be given the red carpet treatment. The two organizations are in town to try to work out a compromise deal on security along Egypt’s border with Gaza. ‘Abbas wants his security forces to receive control of the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, but Hamas, which controls the rest of Gaza, has so far been unwilling to cede to ‘Abbas’ request.
