Muslim Justice Appointed to Israel’s Supreme Court

A Muslim has been appointed to sit on Israel’s Supreme Court. Chaled Kabub, a 63-year old judge who currently serves as deputy head of the Tel Aviv District Court, will become the first Muslim to hold a seat on Israel’s highest court. Proceedings on the selection committee were referred to by multiple sources as “contentious.” The other appointees include Judge Ruth Ronnen, Judge Gila Canfi Steinitz and attorney Yechiel Kasher. Canfi Steinitz is the first woman on the high court of Mizrahi heritage – descended from Middle Eastern or Central Asian Jews. Justice Minister Gideon Sa’ar asserted that the selections lived up to his promise to seat justices based upon “excellence, balance, and diversity.” The Supreme Court comprises 15 justices.
