Although the altercation revolved around a personal feud, officials in Egypt are concerned that the mob killing of a Coptic Christian in the southern part of the country could ignite further unrest and more violence. The incident took place on Sunday, in the village of Tahna Al-Gabal, when a Muslim mob attacked the families of two priests with knives and batons killing one family member. The father of one of the priests was also injured according to an Associated Press report. Mourners attending the funeral for 27-year old Fam Khalaf chanted threatening slogans, vowing the “redeem the cross” in retribution for his killing. Although only ten per cent of the population, Egypt’s Copts are frequent targets of violent attacks by Muslim Egyptians and Islamic extremists.
