Israeli media reports indicate possible movement at last in talks between incumbent Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and newcomer Benny Gantz to form a unity government and stave-off the unpopular notion of sending the nation back to the polls for the third time in a single year. Apparently, the key to the breakthrough lies in Gantz finally standing up to his bloc-partners, “Never Netanyahu” professors Moshe Ya’alon and Yair Lapid, offering them the ability to sit out the time Netanyahu holds the prime ministry and rejoin the government when it becomes Gantz’s turn to lead the coalition. This scenario, though, is not definitive, nor is it the only potential plan being discussed. Nor is it considered a likely outcome by those close to the negotiations. If there is a compromise plan, however, it must be in-hand by December 11 or else the country will be forced into a third election – a clearly unpopular course of action. Meanwhile, President Reuven Rivlin is looking over his role, seeking guidance on certain scenarios. He is reportedly seeking guidance from the attorney general on whether Netanyahu can be allowed to hold office while under indictment.
