Netanyahu Denounces UN Human Rights Council As ‘Circus Of The Absurd’

Jerusalem denounced as a “sham” the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) after the body passed five new resolutions against Israel—one of which calling on the Jewish state to return parts of the Golan Heights captured from Syria in the 1967 war to the Assad regime. Long considered hostile towards Israel, the HRC resolutions were presented by members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation under so-called “Agenda Item 7,” which requires that alleged Israeli violations against the Palestinians be discussed each time the panel convenes. In response, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu slammed the HRC as a “circus of the absurd” and called for its name to be changed to “The Council for Resolutions Against the Only Democracy in the Middle East.” Meanwhile, U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley reiterated Washington’s threat to quit the body over its anti-Israel bias. This comes against the backdrop of reports that the Palestinian Authority has in recent days filed requests to join eight international treaties, including the UN’s International Convention against Apartheid in Sports and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
