The Israeli army has defined the spate of violence roiling Israel and Palestine since October 1 as an “ongoing limited revolt” caused by deep frustration bordering on despair among Palestinians. Since the initiation of the rash of stabbings, some 23 Israelis and 100 Palestinians have died. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu now finds himself in a vice. He can follow the advice of his military advisers, give more leeway to Palestinian protesters, transmit more weapons andĀ armored vehicles to the Palestinian Authority that needs help quelling the revolt, and release elderly Palestinian prisoners as a gesture to the general population that identifies with the militants. Or he can follow the advice of his political advisers (and his own instincts) and hit hard at the Palestinians, thus staving off a growing rebellion on his right-wing flank.
