Netanyahu in Belated Praise of Abbas’ Kidnapping Condemnation

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Tuesday offered praise for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ condemnation of the kidnapping of three Israeli teens last week. At a Jerusalem meeting with visiting Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta, he said, “I appreciate what President Abbas said a few days ago in Saudi Arabia, rejecting the kidnapping…I think these are important words.” Abbas had told the Organization of Islamic Cooperation that, “Those who kidnapped the teenagers want to destroy us.” The Israeli prime minister also chided Abbas to end the alliance with Hamas, which Netanyahu blames for the kidnapping. He said if Abbas is serious in his words, “then logic and common sense mandate that he break his pact with Hamas.”   Netanyahu’s belated comments came as the search and rescue operation appears to be losing steam after daily arrests, mostly of Hamas members, now totaling near 400 but without having provided any real clues to the whereabouts of the three abductees. The boys’ mothers traveled to Geneva on Tuesday where they spoke to the United Nations Human Rights Commission, urging international cooperation for finding the teens.
