Netanyahu Promises to Annex the West Bank if Re-Elected; Wish-List Fills Up Under Trump

The latest campaign promise by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is reverberating far beyond the reach of voters in Tuesday’s election. On Saturday, Netanyahu told television interviewers that if elected he will annex the West Bank, a move most believe would be the most infuriating yet to the Palestinians and a sure bet to scuttle the peace process coming as it does following the move of the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, recognition first of Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem and then the Golan Heights. Israel conquered the Golan Heights, east Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip in the 1967 war. It withdrew from Gaza unilaterally in 2005, but continues to stave-off violent attempts at Palestinian incursions into Israeli communities in proximity to Gaza. About one-half million Israelis who live in West Bank communities are vilified by Palestinians as the greatest obstacle to a peace deal – a charge denied by Israeli officials. President Trump is also the target of intense criticism for his pro-Israel largesse and has been accused of making the Golan announcement and creating the environment for even being able to speak about West Bank annexation. Nevertheless, the West Bank annexation follows logically after the “three gifts” from President Trump to Prime Minister Netanyahu – “gifts” that Netanyahu gladly takes credit for during the election campaign.
