Israeli media are predicting that when the dust clears after Sunday’s Likud elections for the party’s governing institutions, party hawks will sap Prime Minister Netanyahu of significant control and the membership will turn increasingly rightward with growing animosity toward the prime minister. In a telling move, Netanyahu has dropped plans to run for the post of chairman of the Likud Central Committee out of fear of being humiliated by an almost certain defeat. The internal party machinations come as Netanyahu’s cabinet is being plagued by sniping by coalition partners.
