Netanyahu Tweet Sparks Crisis with Mexico

A tweet by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in support of President Trump’s plan to build a wall on the border between the US and Mexico has sparked a diplomatic crisis between Israel and Mexico. “President Trump is right. I built a wall along Israel’s southern border,” Netanyahu tweeted. “It stopped all illegal immigration. Great success. Great idea.” President Trump retweeted the Israeli Prime Minister, sparking a sharply worded letter from Mexico to the Israeli government expressing “the Mexican government’s absolute shock, disappointment in, and rejection of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s statement…Mexico is a friend of Israel, and the Prime Minister should treat us like one.” Other Israeli officials tried to minimize the crisis with Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nachshon tweeting that Netanyahu “referred to our specific security experience which we are willing to share. We do no express a position on US-Mexico relations.” Meanwhile, corruption allegations against Netanyahu continue to expand, with former Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon reportedly telling police that Netanyahu was actively involved in cancelling an international tender to buy submarines, and awarding it to German manufacturer ThyssenKrupp. The German firm is represented in Israel by Netanyahu’s personal lawyer and close friend David Shimron. Israeli media said the preliminary probe into the affair could turn into a full-fledged criminal investigation.
