Netanyahu Visits Amman in Sign of Diplomatic Thaw or to Set-up Kushner, Greenblatt Mission

Observers are speculating over whether Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s trip to Amman Monday afternoon was significant as a sign of a thaw in the diplomatic freeze that followed a shooting incident at the Amman embassy and the subsequent deportation of all Israeli personnel; or whether it relates to formation of the new Middle Eastern dynamics that sees one regional team comprised of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Egypt face-off against Iran, it proxies Lebanon and Islamist subcontractor Hizbullah. Most presumably believe both are true and all facets are inter-related as the first group, allies of the United States, lay the local groundwork for the revelation of the Trump peace plan. One obvious sign that outside forces are goosing Jordan’s King Abdullah II along is that the Kingdom’s leaders have seem to have forgotten that relations with Israel are not supposed to be allowed to return to normal until Jerusalem tries the security guard who shot and killed two Jordanians – one of whom had just attacked an Israeli with a screwdriver – almost one year ago. The tête-a-tête comes in the shadow of a trip to the region by TeamTrump envoys Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt during which they reportedly are seeking as much as one billion dollars to fund reconstruction projects in the Gaza Strip to ‘smooth things over’ with Palestinians. Word from Washington is that it hopes some of the toxicity generated from the perception that the administration is overly generous to the Jewish state and that the Trump negotiating trio — including US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman — all of whom are religious Jews with close ties to Israel, have disqualified the US from its traditional role as honest broker because of policies such as declaring Jerusalem to be Israel’s capital. It might not matter. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who has referred to Ambassador Friedman as “the son of a dog,” has already rejected the Trump plan for the Gaza Strip accusing President Trump of trying under the guise of humanitarian aid to Gaza to further bifurcate Gaza and the West Bank.
